Councillor Chequer was first elected to the council to represent Southwick ward in May 2016 and prior to becoming Deputy Leader, she was the council’s Healthy City portfolio holder. 

She represents the council and city on a number of bodies and organisations including the Safer Sunderland Partnership and the Sunderland Health & Wellbeing Board, both of which she chairs. 

She is also chair of the Central Area Integrated Care Partnership for the North East and North Cumbria. 

As a nurse consultant working in the NHS, Cllr Chequer is passionate about enabling access for all of Sunderland’s residents to high-quality health and social care services, and is committed to working alongside the council’s partners to create a warm, welcoming and vibrant city where everyone can fulfil their true potential.
