The North East Combined Authority is working with the Government, local authorities, fire and rescue services in the region and Homes England to develop a joint collaborative plan that will help take forward the efficient delivery of high rise building cladding remediation through government funded programmes.
The National Remediation Acceleration Plan sets out the approach to tackling barriers to making buildings safe at pace where cladding could cause a fire risk.
Building safety is paramount for our residents across the region and the North East CA is using its convening strengths to develop a regional approach to accelerate cladding remediation of buildings over 18 metres (7 storeys). There are currently 42 buildings that are in scope for government funded schemes with remediation underway in 25 buildings. All works will need to be completed by the end of 2029.
Our partners are working through the National Remediation System to assess buildings over 11 metres that could be identified in need of remediation and suitable for government funded programmes. Any of these buildings will have a date for completing remediation works by the end of 2029.
A North East Local Remediation Acceleration Plan will create a single area strategy, establish joint working protocols, enable streamlined communication and facilitate knowledge sharing and resources. The plan will be finalised by us in autumn 2025.
Our partners, including fire and rescue services, local authorities and the building safety regulator, will continue to use their enforcement and compliance measures to identify, monitor and manage high rise building risks.
It is the accountable person of a building (the party who owns or has responsibility for a building) who is responsible for ensuring a building’s safety, including ensuring the building has appropriate assessments made of fire safety risks.
More generally, our partners are also continuing to work with building owners to ensure remediation is carried out at those buildings with fire safety defects which are not eligible for government funding or developer remediation.
