Our ambitions to improve fares and ticketing across the region include:

  • Simplifying the structure of the multi-modal ticketing offer with a clear and consistent zone structure.
  • Growing bus patronage through more affordable multi-modal and multi-operator daily caps.
  • Intensifying our focus on patronage growth amongst young people and families with a ‘Kids go Free’ trial, £1 single, and a £3 multi-modal day fare cap for 21 and under.
  • Further enhancing the multi-modal offer through the inclusion of more rail routes.

To date, we have launched our £1 single and £3 unlimited multi-modal day tickets for young people who are aged 21 and under. With over 10 million journeys taken place to date, there has been an estimated 3.6 million extra journeys which have been taken as a result of the scheme, generating social and economic benefits whose value is estimated at £18 million. The fares have also had a positive effect on the environment, with bus trips having around 50% lower carbon emissions than travelling by car.

We have also launched our adult fare offer, which includes a series of new regionwide tickets available for those 22 and over. Flat fares include all day travel in Durham for £5, all day travel in Northumberland for £6, all day multi-modal travel in Tyne and Wear for £6.80, and finally all day regionwide multi-modal travel for just £7.50.
