North East families can travel for less this half term, as Mayor Kim McGuinness’ regionwide Kids Go Free offer returns from Saturday 14 February to Sunday 1 March 2026, helping families enjoy affordable days out across County Durham, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear.
The popular initiative aims to make public transport more accessible during school holidays by reducing travel costs for families.
Last summer alone, an estimated 360,000 children travelled for free with a fare-paying adult or concessionary passholder, supporting greener and more affordable journeys across the region.
Councillor Martin Gannon, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “Hundreds of thousands of children have already travelled for free using the Mayor’s Kids Go Free initiative, and I’m delighted that it’s back for February half term.
“It’s great that local transport operators continue to work closely with the Mayor on this important offer, which makes the school holidays that bit more affordable for families in the North East.”
A statement on behalf of local bus operators: “We’re proud to be part of this initiative, which helps parents and carers who want to take children out over the school holidays. Days out can be expensive, so this scheme is a great way to cut costs and support families across the North East.”
Cathy Massarella, Managing Director of Nexus, added: “Kids Go Free has been a real success story on Metro, and it’s great to see it extended on the bus again this half term. It’s a fantastic offer that makes public transport more affordable for families in our region.”
From Saturday 14 February to Sunday 1 March 2026, up to three children aged 11 and under can travel for free on any bus service in County Durham, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear when travelling with a fare-paying adult or concessionary passholder.
The scheme offers families a cost-effective way to get around the region - perfect for half term trips to local attractions, shopping areas or to visit family and friends.
