Great North Run wristbands which provide affordable travel across Metro, bus and ferry are set to be snapped up in record numbers again as they go on general sale for 2025.

North East Mayor Kim McGuinness is encouraging people to get hold of the handy wristbands which are subsidised for runners and spectators alike at £6.50 for a day’s unlimited travel.

North East Mayor Kim McGuinness, said: "The Great North Run is a huge day for our region when we welcome thousands upon thousands of spectators and runners from around the world.

“We are funding affordable and convenient travel for local people and visitors alike so you can buy one handy wristband that lets you use any Metro, Shields Ferry or bus route throughout the day.

“This is all part of making sure the Great North Run is a great experience for everyone who takes part, watches or volunteers on the day.

“I’ll be running again this year for local charities, so I look forward to seeing thousands of my fellow runners putting the Rover wristbands to good use.”

Helen Mathews, Commercial Director at Nexus, said: “The Great North Run Rover wristbands are ideal for anyone taking part in the event, offering unlimited travel on Metro, buses and the Shields Ferry in a no-fuss format.

“For runners and spectators alike, they offer flexibility and will save you time in the queue when it is really busy. If you’re a runner, then you don’t need to worry where your travel ticket is after the race.”

The wristbands are now on sale at: www.nexus.org.uk/greatnorthrun where you can find full details of local public transport for the big day including extra Metro trains and special shuttle buses.

Nexus is also reminding customers the Shields Ferry, which be operating both vessels to provide a high-frequency service, is now cash free.

Wristbands are on sale at www.nexus.org.uk/greatnorthrun until 29 August and will be mailed out to customers ahead of the race.

A special Great North Run event ticket will also be available from all Metro ticket machines from 11 August. This is a paper ticket version of the Great North Run Rover wristband.

The Mayor’s Fares range of multi-modal day tickets is available throughout the year for unlimited travel in Tyne and Wear on bus, Metro and the Shields Ferry thanks to a subsidy from the North East Combined Authority.
