Annual Performance Report

Millions of cheaper journeys, new jobs and major investment are set out in the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority’s latest annual performance report. The report covers delivery since May 2024 and shows how regional funding and devolved powers are being used across transport, jobs, business growth and support for families.

At a glance 

  • 100 million cheaper journeys through the Mayor’s Fares, covering bus, Metro, local rail and ferry, alongside free travel for care leavers 
  • 1,900 jobs created and 600 safeguarded 
  • £1.87bn secured through the region’s Integrated Settlement 
  • A £28.6m Child Poverty Action Plan in place across the region 
  • The UK’s first AI Growth Zone launched, with plans for more than 5,000 jobs and £30bn in investment 
  • 95 electric buses now running, with 32 new EV charge points installed 
    1,905 baby boxes delivered to new families 
  • Over 4,000 homes progressing through brownfield programmes 
    121 SMEs and voluntary organisations supported to cut energy costs 
    Funding for qualifications reaching 68,000 residents 
  • More than 3,000 households supported with energy advice and upgrades 
  • A £70m North East Fund launched, with £7m already invested in 21 businesses 
  • A £104m package agreed for the creative sector, including Crownworks and a new arena at Gateshead Quays 
  • A regional plan to create 25,000 additional green jobs by 2035 
  • Ongoing work to extend the Metro to Washington, reopen the Leamside Line and complete Northumberland Park Station with £10.9m in funding 

What the report covers

The Annual Performance Report brings together delivery across the Authority’s programmes and partnerships. 
It includes work tied to priorities such as reducing child poverty, improving pay and conditions through a New Deal for North East Workers, and growing the green economy. It also tracks progress on transport reform, including bus fares and future rail and Metro investment.
